Bristol is rich in history and culture that you can experience any time of the year. Here are some of our favourite historical places to visit while staying at our B&B in Bristol:

Scenic Train Journeys

Don’t worry about speedy train journeys with a ride on the Pines Express! Although the Pines Express was the Manchester to Bournemouth long-distance service that ran daily between 1910 and 1967 you only need to go far enough to enjoy some amazing Bristol countryside and enjoy a glass of prosecco followed by afternoon high tea and sandwiches.

If scones and finger sandwiches aren’t for you and you want a bit more action then why not get hands-on with a unique opportunity to drive a steam or diesel locomotive!

Other great locomotive activities include a Murder Mystery tour as well as the opportunity to host your own event!

Historical Castles

Thornbury castle is a great place to see and you can even ‘sleep like royalty’ ‘in the very room slept in by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. You can take a tour of the castle and Tudor-walled gardens or experience life as a Tudor Queen, dressing up for the day to fit in with the amazing Tudor surroundings of the castle!

Berkeley Castle is also a great castle to visit. Built around 1154 and still the home of the Berkeley family, you can book a unique tour, guided by the heir, Charles Berkeley!Berkeley Castle Bristol

Hidden Vaults!

Clifton Suspension Bridge offers some amazing scenery and as well as a guided tour, you can also discover the secrets of the hidden vaults.

But remember - they are secret and hidden, so keep it to yourself! Shh!

Bristol City Centre

Although Bristol is a modern city, it has an amazing mix of architecture from over the years influenced by Norman, gothic and Georgian past times. Bristol Cathedral and Castle Park are just a few great places to visit and to absorb the history of Bristol and the surrounding area.

Pirates and cemeteries

Other great opportunities to enjoy the history of Bristol include taking a tour with Pirate Pete or to visit the Arnos Vale Cemetery which is internationally recognised as one of the best examples of a British Victorian garden cemetery.

Bristol was originally founded in the 11th century and was a trading hub for slaves by the Viking rulers. Pirate Pete’s tour only takes an hour but it’s a great chance to see the historic harbourside and hear tales of slavery, piracy and much more!
